A
Map.
We recommend, and use, Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure
Map 28. 1:25,000.
Important
notice: All maps on this web site are diagramatic only.
They should not be used in place of a proper Ordnance
Survey map.To do so could be dangerous.
Compass.
See section on Map Reading.
Ensure you are competent in the use of a compass before
venturing too deeply onto the moors.
Boots.
Trekking boots with good ankle support and solid soles.
The author has Berghaus boots with Yeti gaiters, about
£150 - £200.
Waterproofs.
It can rain on Dartmoor so be prepared; something that
can be folded into a small volume and put in your backpack.
Waterproof leggings are also useful.
Backpack.
For a days trekking a small backpack is essential to
store waterproofs, snack, flask, map, binoculars, compass,
camera.
Additional
clothing.
Hat, gloves, extra jumper.
Emergency
gear.
Whistle, plastic body bag (keeps you warm, makes you
visible), first aid kit, emergency rations, torch.
....... and always tell somebody where you are going,
and your estimated time of return.
That's
it. No need for expensive designer wear on the moors.
Spend it on good boots, a decent map and compass.
